Paint by Dots

About Pointillism

Pointillism was developed in the 1880s by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Instead of mixing colors on a palette, they placed tiny dots of pure color side by side, letting the viewer's eye blend them together.

Seurat's masterpiece "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" took two years to complete, built entirely from millions of tiny dots. The technique creates a luminous, shimmering quality unique to this style.

Using This Digital Version

Simply drag across the canvas to paint. Dots fill in as you move without overlapping, just like placing them by hand. Use the size buttons to change dot size, and press 1, 2, 3 to quickly switch colors.

The constraint of dots-only forces you to think differently about form and color. Try placing complementary colors next to each other and stepping back to see them blend.
